Thus it gives the lips a perfect shape. Lip sticks come in a variety of colours. The colour chosen should harmonise not only with the rest of the make up but also with your attire and skin colour. Soft colours are suited for pale skins and vibrant shades are suited for darker skins.
Lip colour is one of the essentials you should always carry with you. They are available in sticks, tubes, pencils, as liquids and in pots. To keep the colour stay longer, the lips must be dry and clean while applying. It is best applied with a brush. Use the colour according to the skin and age. Lipstick containing more benzene may cause darkness of the lips.

EYE COSMETICS
Eye liners are the most extensively used form of eye make up. Eye liner is used to make the eyes more prominent and create an illusion of thicker lashes. Eye lining is done with a black or brown eye liner on the top lid of each eye and sometimes under the lower lashes. The line should be smooth instead of a harsh line.
Eye liner comes in liquids or pencil form. Care should be taken when using liquid eye liner. It should not go into the eyes. Liquid liners can be either water based or alcohol based. Alcohol based liners are water proof. Indians have our own indigenous type of eye make up -kajal. Home made Kajals does not contain any chemicals.
To apply liquid eye liner, draw the brush out of the bottle or tube and stroke it against the mouth of the tube to remove excess liquid and taper the brush to a fine point. Using the very tip of the brush, stroke the eyeliner evenly across the lid as close to the base of the lashes as possible, beginning with the inner corner of the eye and continuing to the outer corner of the eyelid. Apply the line in several short brush strokes.
To apply eyebrow pencil, brush your eyebrows with a eyebrow brush to remove excess foundation or face powder. Then with outward brush strokes, smooth the hairs in the direction in which they grow. To shape your brows properly, begin by using short, light strokes of the pencil to outline the top of each eyebrow up to its arch. Use featherlike strokes to extend each brow to the end. Fill in any sparse areas by using these same strokes. Then brush your brows with an eyebrow brush to smooth them and blend in the pencil strokes.

HAIR STYLES
Choosing a hairstyle depends on various factors. An important factor is the shape of your face. Your life style is also a major element. If you wash, condition and style your hair every morning, a short cut may be best for you. If you have plenty of time for hair care you may prefer to wear your hair long.
A round face will look best with hairstyles that add angles and helps conceal broad, round cheeks. For persons who have short hair, it is better to have a cut with most of the hair on top and less on sides. For long hair, an hairstyle with curls or waves surrounding the face will be better.
A square jaw and brow are best softened by a curly or wavy hair style that rounds off the angles of your face. Curls or waves worn forward on the outer edges of your face from your forehead will be more suited for a square face. The distribution, quantity and texture of your hair, the curliness or straightness and your height are the other important factors for choosing a hair style.
An oval face can be enhanced by a variety of simple hairstyles. Your hairstyle will be most pleasing, if you wear it straight or slightly wavy. Short or long styles will look best when brushed or held back from your face. The best hairstyle for this shape face are those worn away from your face at your forehead.

TYPES OF SKIN
Normal Skin:It has a fine even texture with a supple and smooth surface. It has a proper balance between oil and moisture contents and is therefore moist and neither greasy nor dry. The pores of normal skin are small and the overall skin tone is even. It looks clear and does not develop spots and blemishes. The pores of the skin are fine and barely visible. It reflects good health and needs gentle treatment.
Dry skin:Dry skin has a dry parched appearance and has a tendency to flake easily. It is prone to wrinkles and lines. It is due to the inability to retain moisture as well as the insufficient production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Dry skin often has problems in cold weather and ages faster than normal or oily skin. Constant protection is very important. It needs a moisturiser during the day and a good cream at night.
Oily skin:As its name implies, oily skin is slightly to moderately greasy. This type of skin is caused by the over secretion of sebum making the skin surface oily. The excess oil on the surface of the skin attracts dirt and dust from the environment. Oily skin is also prone to black heads, white heads, spots, pimples and such skin will never be clear. This type of skin needs to be cleansed thoroughly.
Sensitive skin:This type of skin has a fine texture and is very sensitive to changes in the climate. They show the disadvantage of bleaching, Waxing, threading, perfumes, temperature extremes, soap etc and for men sun, perfumes, shaving cream etc. Avoid products with dyes, perfumes, or unnecessary chemical ingredients that may irritate skin.

SKIN DISORDERS
The skin is subject to various problems - blemishes, infections and growth due to internal or external causes. It occurs equally among men and women. Change in tissue formation. A firm raised lesion. Similar to papule but contains puss. Excessive secretion of disturbed quantity of sebum is collected upon the skin in the form of oily coating. This is known as seborrhea. Some times a burning sensation is felt.
White heads - These are caused by pores getting clogged with hardened oil. Here the pores are not open. They therefore show up as tiny white pearly lumps beneath the surface of the skin. They usually form on oily skin.Black heads - In this case the pores are open and clogged sebum is exposed to the air. Oxidation takes place turning it black in colour.
Acne - This is one of the most common skin disorders which primarily affects the adolescents as it can be caused by increase of sex hormones which takes place during puberty. This imbalance of sex hormones causes the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum (Sebum is a semi-fluid oily substance which lubricates the skin). The pores of the skin enlarge and get blocked with hardened sebum.
This result in black heads and pimples. Some of these develop into pustule which rupture and spread infection. Both men and women are affected by acne, but young men are more likely to have more severe, longer lasting forms of acne. Acne should never be neglected as it causes extensive scarring. Clinical and professional treatment is necessary.

SKIN CARE
Cleansing is the first essential step in your daily skin care routine. Cleansing the face 2-3 times a day; is adequate for normal skin. If your skin is oily a more frequent cleansing i.e. 4-5 times a day is necessary. If your skin is dry it is best to avoid frequent washing and you may have to use a suitable oil-based cosmetic cleanser instead of soap, which has a dry effect.
There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing. Cleansers can be in the form of creams, milks, lotions, gels and liquids. All are, a mixture of oil, wax and water which have been formulated to suit different skin types. A cotton -pad dipped in fresh milk available at home, is an equally effective cleanser.
The right way to apply cleansers and creams on your face is in an upward and outward movement. The skin should not be stretched, dragged or pulled. Leave the cleanser on for a minute or two so as to loosen the dirt and make up.Remove it either using a cotton wool or with a tissue paper, again using an upward and out ward movement.
Finally rinse with water.Basically all face masks have some sort of a cleansing action. Various ingredients are used in the masks, depending on the skin type. Clay, form an important constituent of many face masks. They help to remove dirt, sebum, and dead skin so that the skin looks clean, soft and youthful.

BEAUTY HAIR
Good looking hair is essentially healthy, shiny and clean. It is important to maintain a healthy routine of hair care. Taking care of your hair involves keeping it clean and conditioned and choosing a hair style that suits you. With proper care your hair can become one of your important beauty assets.
Dry hair is due to inactive oil glands. It is also caused by other factors like over exposure to the sun, using harsh shampoo and chemical treatment. Accumulated oil, block the pores not allowing the oil to flow on to the surface. This is another reason for dry hair. Dry hair would need plenty of nourishment.
This is usually accompanied with oily skin. This is due to the over secretion of oil. Hence the scalp and hair gets too oily. Oily hair is easily recognizable. It looks greasy even after shampooing and and attracts more dirt. The oily hair needs to be washed every third or fourth day or even more frequently depending on individual comfort and rinsed out with lemon.
This is the most ideal hair. It is shining, well balanced and does not dry out. To maintain this ideal condition a well balanced diet and proper care is essential. A head massage with a herbal oil helps maintain the pH level of the scalp. Avoid oily foods and binge on green leafy vegetables and fruits.

HAIR CARE
To shampoo is to wash, cleanse or remove all dirt or other impurities from the scalp and hair by the process of shampooing. The selection of the shampoo should depend upon the hair type. Egg shampoo is good for dry hair but avoid products which contain alcohol as they will dry out the hair even further. For oily hair use some mild shampoo.
Care should be taken while using shampoo. Do not scrub or over massage. It is better to rinse thoroughly with Luke warm water. If the hair is too oily, add lemon juice in Luke warm water and rinse.Shampooing can be done as often (ideally every alternate day) as required to keep the hair clean and healthy, as long as you condition regularly. Switch shampoos once a month to avoid hair buildup.
Prepare the hair for shampooing. Before wetting your hair for shampooing, comb through with a wide toothed comb to prevent tangles.Mix the water to a comfortable temperature. Wet the hair and scalp thoroughly. Apply the shampoo to the hair by first pouring it into your hand and never directly. Apply with the hands and fingers, massage firmly in rotating and circular movements. Massage the whole head. Rinse the hair and scalp thoroughly and carefully.
Apply more shampoo and massage for the second time if needed, finally rinse all shampoo from the hair and scalp with clean water. Finally check the hair lines and make sure that the dirt and shampoo has been removed from hair and scalp. Dry the hair gently. Don't rub just blot the wet hair with a towel and then smooth the towel along the length of your hair. Avoid blow drying as far as possible. If you shampoo regularly there is no need to lather twice.

FOUNDATION
Foundation should be considered as a skin improver. Foundation should match your skin tone. To choose a colour apply little on your cheek or inside of your wrist. Be careful to blend around nose and chin and fade away under the chin. Heavy foundation is old fashioned and ageing. Foundation should never appear like a mask. The shade chosen should be as close to your natural skin tone, so that there is no sudden change of colours between Chin and neck.
Emulsions : These are packaged in tubes and are formulated for a variety of skin types- for dry skins, oily skins and normal skins. This gives less sheen than cream or liquid foundations, but cover blemishes very well. Creams: These are packed in jars. As they contain a high proportion of oils, they are particularly suitable for dry skins. These also provide a heavy cover, but gives a glossy finish.
Liquids: These are packaged in bottles and can be formulated for all skin types. They give a light sheen cover but are too light to cover any blemishes and scars.Gels : These are packaged in squeeze tubes. They give a light, natural look and are the variety you should use if you have a blemish free normal skin.
Powders : The original full coverage face-powders have now given way to transparent powders; these transparent powders control shine and provide oil - blotting. They are used after foundations to give a matt finish. Cake or compact powders are more heavily formulated; as they contain a certain amount of foundation. These are not the best choice for the initial powdering over foundation because they may rub the foundation off and also cause an unattractive colour build-up. They are best used for touching up during the way, as they help to reinforce coverage.

EYE SHADOWS
Eye shadows leave a shiny or opaque finish depending on the time of make up and shape of eyes. To achieve the perfect daytime look with eye shadow, you need to follow some basic guidelines. The basic tones you need are a pale highlighter shade for your brow bone area, a basic shade for your eyelids.
The shades you choose can be deep-toned or pale, neutral or bright, but they should be applied so that they are not too strong. Blending is important while applying eye shadow. The colour used should be appropriate to the colour of the skin and match the colour of the dress. When you use more than one shade they should be so well blended that you can't tell where one ends and the next one begins.
When you apply eye shadow, always start with the highlighter shade. Brush it just under the outer end of each eyebrow and quickly blend the colour inward toward the inner end of the eyebrow, above the inner corner of the eye. After that apply the eyelid shadow by beginning in the centre of each lid, just above the pupil of your eye. With a blending brush, make a quick back and forth motion. Finish the make up by blending upward to meet the highlighter shade.
Eye Shadows come in a variety of forms like pencils, sticks, gels or creams. Pressed powders are the most popular form of shadows. They are available in pearly and matt textures. You can get a better effect, if you apply them with a wet brush. The cream shadows are oil or wax based. It is best suited for dry lids and should be avoided on greasy eye lids. Pencils have a high colour and filling ability. Gels are suited for oily skins.

WALKING OR CYCLING IMPROVE KIDS’ HEALTH
Walking or cycling to school may be an effective and efficient way to integrate physical activity into the daily routine of children, according to researchers at Kansas State University. An Australian study suggests that poor urban design and safety fears are turning off kids from walking and cycling to school, and, thereby, increasing obesity rates.
Led by Pam Wittman, a K-State senior in kinesiology, the project included two surveys conducted in 2008 that looked at demographics, psychosocial factors and environmental characteristics related to active commuting. A survey of more than 800 individuals at K-State was conducted, followed by another survey of 400 Manhattan area residents.
The results of the study have paved the way for future policy discussions, and for tailoring public health messages. In the campus study, the researchers found that students were most likely to actively commute, then faculty members, and then staff.Women and men were equally interested in walking or biking, while older individuals were less likely to actively commute than younger individuals.
Depending on distance to campus, those living within a 20-minute walk actively commuted four times a week, and those within a 20-minute bike ride, biked to campus five times per week. The researchers revealed that many survey participants said that they were willing to actively commute if they perceived they could travel to their destination in about 20 minutes, or a distance of approximately one mile.

SUMMER HEALTH TIPS
The Sun is in full swing these days and it is gradually increasing its heat too. It’s the scorching summer season- and for some cool activities outdoors. But with all the fun and frolic, what comes along is ill health. Many a time’s the blazing summer sun and the rising heat take a toll on our health. As a result of which several summer sicknesses like heat strokes, food poisoning and heat allergies etc. affect both children and adults equally. Where children need to be specially protected from the heat and are required to keep cool, adults too need to take complete care of themselves during the hot days.
To protect oneself from summer sicknesses it is essential to take proper care of few very basic factors that seem negligible, but as a matter of fact are life saving tips during the summer season. The most common problem that people face during the hot days include heat strokes that occur due to excessive heat exposure. Staying out in the sun for long hours result in excessive sweating (draining out of body water). As a result our body looses its resistance power and falls out. Here are few steps that should be followed in order to avoid heat strokes.
Drink plenty of liquids like water, juices, cold shakes, sweet lime-soda etc. Avoid eating junk and heavy food.Eat lots of summer-fruits like watermelons, grapefruits etc. Eating plenty of salads with broccoli lettuce, cucumbers etc are also advised. Avoid venturing out too much during the daytime. Try and stay indoors or in air-conditioned places when possible.
Another very common problem faced during the summer season is food poisoning. Cooked food tends to get destroyed faster in the summer seasons than in other times of the year. It is therefore suggested not to keep food out in the heat for long. Also if prepared food is being deep freezed for later use, make sure it does not stay there for a long period. Few factors that can prevent food poisoning are: Do not eat out-side or street cooked foods, as the possibility of germs growing on them is comparatively higher. Do not eat stale food.Do not cook food in water that is static for a long time. Use fresh and clean water always.Avoid eating red-meat during the summers.

DENTAL HYGIENE
Dental care is a vital part of personal hygiene. You just cannot afford to neglect it. All it needs is regular care and caution. Halitosis or bad breath can be embarrassing and could cause social and psychological problems. It can even affect marriages. Remember, lack of dental hygiene will not only wreck your personal life, it could tell on your health too.Bacteria that live on teeth and gums are the prime cause of bad breath. We need to take extra care and make sure that these bacteria are eliminated regularly and effectively.
Brush your teeth well. Ideally, it takes two to three minutes to brush your teeth well. But most people seem to finish brushing their teeth in less than a minute. That won't be too effective. Drink plenty of water. Bad breath is accentuated by dryness of the mouth. It helps bacteria flourish. Drinking a lot of water not only helps washing away left over food particles, it also stimulates saliva flow. Saliva plays a vital part in keeping the mouth clean and dissolving the compounds that could cause halitosis.Chew sugarless gum.
This will help clean teeth and also stimulate the flow of saliva. Gum with sugar is not considered healthy and is therefore not recommended by dentists.Check for dental problems. This could cause bad breath too. These problems are easily solved by a visit to the dentist. A dental check up is necessary at least once a year.Inter dental cleaning is very important. Flossing is a must.
It helps removing plaque from between our teeth and under our gums.Rinse well after every meal – don't depend solely on mouth fresheners. Whenever possible, try to rinse with warm water and salt. Add a few drops of lime juice to a teaspoon of salt. Brush your teeth with it once a week. It will add a shine to your teeth besides keeping your breath clean.

HEALTH
Calories can be likened to money. Spend more than you earn and your bank balance will go into the red. Eat just a little more every day than what you burn and your fat balance will increase over a period of time. And remember that neither your genetics nor your food environment can alter this equation which is but a simple mathematical truth. So what it means is just this – Energy eaten – energy burned = energy stored.
All extra energy is converted into fat and stored by the body. However, if you start muscle building exercises this fat will get converted into muscle. Eat less calories every day and exercise regularly to burn that extra fat and see the difference. You may not notice it immediately, but it does help in the long run and you will certainly reap rich benefits in your twilight years.
Calories are burnt through the process called ‘metabolism’ – something which is required to maintain our physical activity levels, to help in the digestion of whatever we eat, for proper functioning of all the organs and for tissue repair when necessary. What is burned as calories for these activities is called the ‘basal metabolic rate’ and this will happen even if you spend the whole day just sleeping.
As women tend to have lower resting metabolic rates, their bodies require less calories to function. So if you eat more than what you need, obviously, it is all going to get converted into fat and stored in all those inconveniently obvious places on your body. You can work wonders on your body if you take the time to do muscle building exercises every day as this will increase your muscle mass. Ever felt envious of those lucky souls who eat heartily and yet seem to never put on weight? The secret is their fast metabolic rate (which is also hereditary) because of which they burn the calories at a faster rate.

MIGRAINE
Migraine may result from a of causes such as low blood sugar, infection, excessive intake of certain drugs like vitamin A, weak constitution, low energy, nutritional deficiency, overwork, improper sleep and rest, excessive smoking, drinking and sex. Menstruation in women may also be one of the important causes of migraine due to the effect of chemical hormone changes occurring during this period. This form of migraine is usually eliminated with menopause.
There are various factors which trigger off migraine. The most important is consuming food which the patient may be allergic to. Such foods include certain chocolates, cheese and other dairy products, fried foods in general, onions, tomatoes, citrus fruits as well as coffee, tea, nicotine and alcoholic drinks which stimulate or depress the nerves and alter the size of blood vessels. Other triggers include excessive bright light, eye-strain, excitement, fright, hurry, anger, resentment and depression after hard work.
There is a definite pattern for migraine. The pain rages on only one side of the head and often radiates from the eye. The right side of the head may be affected in one attack and in the next it may be the left side. Migraine attacks are usually preceded by a short period of depression , irritability and loss of appetite. The main symptoms are a pounding pain, nausea and vomiting. The blood vessels on the affected side of the head will be prominent and pulsating. Migraine gives fair warning before striking. The patient sees flashes of light or black spots or only parts of the objects in front of him. He may also feel numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, or on one side of the face. Sometimes the numbness may affect both sides of the face and tongue and whole mouth, making speech slurred and difficult.
As the head ache develops, disturbed digestion becomes a marked feature. A severe attack of migraine is very tiring and the patient may have to rest in bed so as to exclude light and noise as far as possible, because both cause painful irritations. The whole of the head becomes hypersensitive and even the slightest movement adds to the intense pain.

REGULAR HEALTH CHECK UPS
Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can prevent a lot of problems in the future. It's good to find out that you have a problem, before it is too late to cure it. So appropriate tests should be done at the right time.
The main aim of a check-up is to detect illness at an early stage, or better still prevent illness occurring in the first place. Some tests saves so many lives that it is definitely worth the money spend on it. In adults up to about 40 years, a check-up every two years is appropriate. Older adults should be seen every year or so.
Physical Exam: The doctor will check your height, weight and blood pressure, and listen to your heart beats, lungs and carotid artery for abnormalities such as a heart murmur or lung obstruction. A doctor who is very thorough may also check your mouth, ears, lymph nodes, thyroid and rectum and feel your abdomen for abnormalities, and scan your skin for signs of cancer.
Lab Tests: Some tests, such as mammography and pap smears, are usually based on guidelines set by respected research organizations. In addition, your doctor may want to run tests for diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis or prostate cancer, and to screen your heart, liver, kidney, blood and urine. The extent of other tests your doctor recommends will be determined by any risk factors you may have based on your medical or family history.

STRESS MANAGEMENT
Stress can be defined as a state of physical and mental tension caused by certain external or internal factors in a person's life. The art of stress management is to keep yourself at a level of stimulation that is healthy and enjoyable. Life without stimulus would be incredibly dull and boring.
Life with too much stimulus becomes unpleasant and tiring, and may ultimately damage your health or well-being. Too much stress can seriously interfere with your ability to perform effectively. By analyzing the likely causes of stress, you will be able to plan your responses to likely forms of stress. These might be actions to alleviate the situation or may be stress management techniques that you will use.
Some signs and symptoms of stress: Tiredness/ Exhaustion, Insomnia, Irritability, impatience, angry outbursts, Pains almost everywhere, particularly digestive and abdominal, Increased reliance on alcohol, smoking, coffee etc., Muscle tension, Loss of or increased appetite, Anxiety, Grinding teeth/clenching jaws, Nervousness/trembling, Cold, sweaty hands.
The mind's reaction to stress is harder to predict. These mental reactions vary according to the situation and the person. They may include feelings of anger, fear, anxiety, annoyance or frustration. Prolonged stress is a serious condition can lead to life threatening illnesses particularly high blood pressure, stroke and heart attacks.

EXERCISES
Regular exercise is vital to help maintain good health. Exercise burns up extra calories in food and reduces the likelihood of these being converted into fat. Regular exercise makes you fit, gives a general sense of well-being, improves appetite and sleep and makes the heart and circulation, lungs and respiration work more efficiently. Exercise carried out for about 20 minutes three times a week is beneficial for the body.
Walking: Walking is the best form of moderate exercise. Brisk walking help circulation of blood throughout the body. Walking can help people avoid a heart attack, peel off pounds and even develop a hard body. An ideal walking schedule for beginners is 20 minutes 6 or 7days a week. As you develop endurance and loose weight increase your walking time gradually. If you don't need to lose body fat, you can stay fit by walking 20 to 30 minutes 3 days a week.
Cycling : Cycling strengthens legs and thighs, heart and lungs and improve circulation. Fresh air, speed and sense of freedom allow the mind to soar. Ride at an even speed, instead of exhausting the energy by pedalling hard. The continual pumping action benefits the heart.
Tennis , Badminton and squash : These sports help develop strong buttocks and leg muscles, strengthen wrists, reflexes, eye hand co-ordination and foot work ability. Warm up before you play. Drink plenty of liquids after play.Other daily activities like climbing stairs, gardening, carrying groceries etc all count towards moderate exercises which help in burning calories.

AVOID SMOKING
Cigarette contains chemical such as tar, carbon monoxide and nicotine. The prime ingredients, tar and carbon monoxide are instigators of cardiovascular diseases and lung ailments. The cigarette's third main component, nicotine, affects the heart, lungs and stomach. There is definite evidence that this chemical effects the brain adversely in various ways.
Smoking and tobacco-related health complications are the single largest cause of preventable, premature death. Estimates are clearing that cigarettes are responsible for over 400,000 deaths each year. Smoking causes a significant increase in the risk for cancer (lung, larynx, esophagus), chronic bronchitis, and emphysema as well as diseases of the heart and coronary arteries. In addition, smoking is a major contributory factor in the development of many other cancers.
Smokers can successfully quit if they understand how to deal with their nicotine addiction, learn a relaxation technique to cope with their stress, get support from health professionals, family and friends and are able to change the behaviour and habits that are associated with smoking.
Most long-term smokers are addicted to nicotine and will experience a craving to smoke and withdrawal symptoms when they try to stop smoking. Such individuals find it very difficult to give up their smoking habit. They, with the help of health professionals can make use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to quit smoking. But the majority of smokers can give up without any help from health professionals or drug therapy.

AVOIDING ALCOHOL
Consumption and abuse of alcohol has been a major public health problem from time immemorial. Alchohol (Ethyl alcohol or ethanol) made out of Fermented grain, fruit juice and honey is a depressant, and if taken in small amounts relaxes the mind and reduce anxieties.
Alcohol is a very small molecule and is soluble in 'lipid' and water solutions. So when people drink, alcohol is absorbed into their bloodstream very easily. It slows the function of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), which controls virtually all body functions. It blocks some of the messages trying to get to the brain. This alters your perceptions, your emotions, and even your movements, vision and hearing. But moderate consumption dilates blood vessels and reduces the risk of clot formation.
Chronic drinking can lead to dependence and addiction to alcohol and to additional neurological problems. More alcohol causes greater changes in the brain, resulting in intoxication. People who have overused alcohol may stagger, lose their coordination, and slur their speech. They will probably be confused and disoriented. Intoxication can make people very friendly and talkative or very aggressive and angry.
When large amounts of alcohol are consumed in a short period of time, alcohol poisoning can result. Alcohol poisoning is very dangerous. Violent vomiting is usually the first symptom, as the body tries to rid itself of the alcohol. Extreme sleepiness, unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, dangerously low blood sugar, seizures, and even death may result.

NUTRIENTS
Nutrients are substances derived from food during the process of digestion. There are three main groups of nutrients contained in food which are needed by the body in differing amounts. They are carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. These major nutrients are needed by the body for growth, repair, maintenance and energy.
In addition, the body requires fibre, vitamins and minerals which are present in varying quantities in different types of food. Good nutrition requires a balance of the right nutrients, that is, getting the proper amount, or proportion, of each one. Our diet should provide adequate amount of all nutrients to maintain good health and physical efficiency.
Daily food intake should be such that of the total consumption, about 15 to 20% is protein, 40 to 50% is complex Carbohydrates and 20 to 30% is fat. Fats are a group of organic compounds that occur naturally in plant and animal cells in the form of lipids, consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. They are an important energy store, having twice the calorific value than carbohydrates. They are broken down into its constituents parts by enzymes called lipases.
Fats play a vital role in the human body and perform many functions. They are necessary for the absorption and utilization of certain vitamins like A, E, D and K. Fat deposit help to maintain body temperature against outside environmental influences and protects body organs such as the heart and the liver. Fats contain Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) which are essential for maintaining tissues in normal health.

CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are organic compounds which may be simple and complex. It include sugars and starches. All carbohydrates are eventually broken down into glucose which is absorbed and utilized by the body in various ways. Glucose is required by red blood cells and is the main source of energy for the brain.
It is also essential for the oxidation of fat and for the synthesis of certain non-essential amino acids. Simple carbohydrates like sugar and sugar enriched food is broken down easily and soon absorbed into the blood stream whereas complex carbohydrates like starches take longer time to be broken down by digestive enzymes hence providing a slower and more gradual supply of glucose.
Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy which provide about two-thirds of an individuals total energy needs. Sugars are found in glucose (its basic form) and sweets, biscuits, chocolates, pastries, honey, fruits etc. Starches are found in a wide range of foods including cereals, grains, pulses, bread, beans, potatoes, other vegetables and fruits which are far more useful as they contain accompanying fibre, vitamins and minerals.
It is sensible to eat more starch rich foods as excess sugar rich foods may lead to obesity, high blood sugar, tooth decay and a possible increased risk of developing diabetes in later adult life. The percentage of calories derived from carbohydrates should be at least 40% in well balanced diets. But this consumption differs country wise depending on the difference in diets. While in developing nations it is as high as 60-70%, it is 40-50% in Europe and 30-40% in USA.

PROTEINS
Proteins are the structural components of the body forming the basis of cells, tissues and organs. They are a large group of organic compounds consisting of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Some contain sulphur and phosphorus also. When the proteins are digested they break down into smaller units called amino acids. Of the 20 basic amino acids 12 can be manufactured by the body and the rest, called the 'essential amino acids' must be obtained from food.
Proteins help to repair worn out or diseased tissues and to build new ones. It is used in the formulation of hormone, enzymes, red blood cells and antibodies. It also provides amino acids necessary for growth of fetus in pregnancy and for the production of milk proteins during lactation. Proteins are widely found in foods derived both from plant and animal sources.
Plant sources include beans, peas, pulses, whole grains, nuts and oil seeds; while red meat, poultry, fish, milk, cheese, yogurt and eggs are obtained from animals. Red meat is a good source of essential amino acids and iron and is traditionally regarded as 'first class' protein. But too much consumption of red meat may be harmful as it is a major source of undesirable saturated fat.
One can eat more fish or chicken without the fatty skin instead of excess red meat. Vegetarians can obtain plenty of both from plant sources, whole grain cereals and from low fat diary products. A protein deficiency especially in infants and growing children can cause growth retardation, severe wasting of muscle etc.

VITAMINS – FAT SOLUBLE
Vitamin A (retinol) is needed for the normal bone formation, maintenance of skin and tissues. The main sources of vitamin A are fish liver oils, liver of animals, diary products like butter, ghee, milk and eggs. Green leafy vegetables, red palm oil, carrot, pumpkin and ripe mango are important sources of carotene. Carotene (Provitamin A) is converted to vitamin A in the intestinal walls. A deficiency causes night blindness and possible total loss of vision, and causes the tissues to be keratinised. Adults and older children require 750mg of Vitamin A and 3000 mg of Carotene daily. But excess of Vitamin A is toxic i.e children receiving daily large doses 30,000 to 1,50,000may have headache, a dry itching sin, swelling and brittleness of bones.
Vitamin D (Calciferol) controls calcium levels in the blood, prompting increased uptake of the minerals from the digestion of food and hence making it available for bone growth and repair. The deficiency of Vitamin D causes bone deformities. The dietary sources are fish liver oils (of cod, halibut, shark), fat fish ( sardine, salmon, Herring), egg yolk and dairy products( butter, ghee, milk). D3 (Cholecalciferol) can be formed in the skin from the sun's rays. The daily requirement of Vitamin D for adults is about 200 I.U and for infants, children, pregnant and nursing women it is 400 I.U. An excess can produce toxic symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting etc
Vitamin E comprises several compounds that are essential for the maintenance of cell membranes. It is essential for normal reproduction. The main sources are wheat germ oil, corn germ oil, vegetable oils ( Soy bean, cottonseed, sunflower, ground nut, mustard, coconut etc) cereals and eggs. Daily requirements are 25-30 mg for adults and 10-20mg for children.
Vitamin K or Phylloquinone, a Compound form, act as a coenzyme in protein synthesis in blood clotting. Inadequate intake of vitamin K by the mother may cause hemorrhagic disease of the new born. The deficiency is rare but if it occurs, the result may be severe bleeding. Green leafy vegetables ( spinach, cabbage, kale), vegetables (cauliflower, soybean, carrots, potatoes), wheat bran, wheat germ etc are good dietary sources.

VITAMINS – WATER SOLUBLE
Vitamins are a group of organic substances that are required in minute quantities in the diet in order to maintain good health. A lack of a particular vitamin results in a deficiency disease. There are six vitamin groups such as Vitamin A, B, C, D, E , K and P. Water soluble vitamins include (1) Vitamin B complex - Vitamin B1( thiamine, aneurin), Riboflavin, nicotinic acid and Nicotinamide, Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxin) , Pantotnenic acid, folic acid, Biotin, Choline, P- Amino benzoic acid, Inositol and Vitamin B12 (2) Vitamin C (3) Vitamin P .
Vitamin B Complex includes B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin) B3 (niacin or Nicotinic acid), B6 (Pyroxidine ), Pantotnenic acid, folic acid, Biotin, Choline, P- Amino benzoic acid, Inositol, B12 (Cyanocobalamin) etc. Vitamin B is required for the manufacture of Red blood cells, enzyme activity and for amino acid metabolism. It is essential to maintain the nerves in healthy condition, normal functioning of the skin and intestinal tract.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is needed for maintenance of cell walls and connective tissue including blood vessels and tendons. It helps in the rapid healing of wounds and in the absorption of iron. A deficiency causes fragility of skin, blood vessels and tendons characteristics of the disease known as Scurvy. General weakness, spongy bleeding gums, loose teeth, swollen tender joints, hemorrhages in various tissues and under the skin are symptoms. Main sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables (drumstick leaves, coriander leaves, cabbage). Gooseberry and Guava are rich sources. Orange, pineapple, lime juice, cashew fruit, ripe mango, papaya and tomato are good sources. Daily requirements are adults 50 mg and children, between 30-50 mg.
Vitamin P ( Bioflavonoids) is essential along with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) in preventing capillary fragility. A deficiency causes decreased capillary (vessel) resistance leading to bleeding, accompanied by pain across the shoulders and in the legs. The main sources are fresh fruits (orange, apple, blackberry, cherry, plum) and vegetables (spinach, tomato, lettuce, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, pea etc.).

MINERALS
Calcium:Among minerals, Calcium is present in the highest amount in the body mostly in the skeleton. Calcium is essential for the formation of bone and teeth, for clotting of blood, contraction of heart and muscle etc. A deficiency can cause 'Osteoporosis' in which decalcification of bone occurs. Even minor accidents can cause fractures. In children, a deficiency can cause a decreased rate in growth. Small fish eaten along with bones, skim milk powder etc are excellent sources and milk, milk products like curd, sesame seeds, ragi, green leafy vegetables like carrot leaves, drumstick leaves etc are other good sources.
Iron:A greater part of the Iron in the body is present as Haemoglobin. Iron deficiency causes anaemia and is widely prevalent among children, adolescent girls and expectant and nursing mothers. Cereals are the most important sources of iron for Vegetarians and the other important sources are legumes, green leafy vegetables and jaggery. Meat, fish and eggs are also important sources of iron. The daily recommended allowances for iron is Adults 20-30mg, children between15-20 mg, pregnant and nursing women need more iron.
Iodine:Iodine is a constituent of thyroxine, the active principle of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland plays an important role in energy metabolism and in the growth of the body. A deficiency can cause enlargement of thyroid, resulting in the disease called goitre. In children, severe iodine deficiency may result in serious retardation of growth known as cretinism. Iodine requirements for adults are about 0.15 to 0.2 mg daily and for infants and children 0.05 to 0.10 mg daily.
Sodium Chloride (Nacl):All minerals except Sodium Chloride (Nacl) are usually present in sufficient amounts in a well - balanced diet. Sodium chloride is the only mineral which is taken in more or less pure form in addition to the amount present in natural foods. Salt taken in food is the source of Nacl. The requirements depend on the climate and occupation. People doing heavy work in hot humid climates need more Nacl.

The requirements depend on the climate and occupation. People doing heavy work in hot humid climates need more Nacl.
CALORIES
The amount of energy supplied by a nutrient is measured in calories. Technically, one calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Centigrade (from 14.5 to 15.5). The 'calorie' measure used commonly to discuss the energy content of food is actually a kilocalorie (KCal) or 1000 real calories; this is the amount of energy required to raise one kilogram of water (about 2.2 pounds) one degree Centigrade.
Different foods can be used by the body to produce different amounts of energy. 60 to 65 percent of your calories are spent just keeping you alive and keeping your heart beating, your kidneys filtering waste, and maintaining temperature near 98 degrees. Another 25 percent goes for pure movement. The remaining 10 percent of calories is spent processing food. Various national and international Committees have recommended allowances for different nutrients and the total calorie needs for different age groups with different activity levels.
At least a minimum amount of 1200 calories of nutritious food should be consumed a day. Fewer than that would lower iron level and slow down metabolism.Your calorie needs depends on a lot of factors like your age, gender, size, height, weight, activity level and also the climate and environment you live in. The lower body size and the warm climate in tropical countries make the calorie requirements of people living there less than those corresponding age groups living in temperate climates.
Likewise, Calorie needs will hit the highest point during your mid - twenties, so at 25, you need 2300 calories/day. And then decline at about 2% per decade, by 35 you may need only 2254 calories. This reduction in calorie needs is due partly to an increase in body fat percentage that comes with age. The gender factor also have its influence on calorie needs. Men because of their higher percentage of lean muscle tissue, need 5-10% more calories than women. But women during pregnancy and lactation will need 300- 500 calories more per day than their usual needs.

ASTHMA
Chronic asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes airways to tighten and narrow, causing difficulty in breathing. It is an chronic allergic condition which often begins in early childhood. When the airways become irritated, they become narrower obstructing air from moving in and out easily. Exposure to allergies, viral infections causing cough and cold, smoke, dust and pollution. causes the mucous membranes in the small branches of the sensitive airways (bronchi) to swell and fill with mucus which makes breathing a struggle.
Asthma attacks can also be triggered by hard physical exertion (exercise induced asthma) and can also be related to genetics. This can cause, coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and produces a wheezing sound when breathing out.The symptoms, frequency, severity and duration of an asthma episode vary from child to child. Severity of the attack depends of the extent to which bronchi are narrowed. In a severe attack, the child may be so breathless that he may not be able to speak and may show a bluish colour of the skin and mucus membranes due to lack of oxygen in the blood. In such cases emergency medical care is needed.
If any of the symptoms persist, you should consult a medical practitioner whether your child has asthma. The diagnosis of asthma involves checking whether you have a family history of asthma, medical history of hay fever, eczema, itchy eyes, allergies, frequent colds, nasal stuffiness and persistent cough etc. Physical examination involves examination of the nasal passages and listening to the lungs.
If asthma is triggered by allergy to a particular substance, one should take measures to avoid such allergens. Treatment includes medications and drugs which are mostly inhaled. Drugs mainly belong to two groups (a) bronchodilators which are used to dilate the airways like Beta 2 agonists such as salbutamol, terbutaline (short acting drugs) and longer acting drug like salmeterol etc. and Anticholinergics such as Theophylline, not commonly used in children. These drugs are quick acting and relieve the symptoms of wheezing, coughing and breathlessness (b) anti-inflammatory drugs such as Corticosteroids and sodium cromoglicate which is a good first-line preventative treatment in children.

MEASLES
Measles is a extremely infectious viral disease caused by paramyxo virus. It usually occurs in children and is charecterised by the presence of a rash on the body. It effects the skin, upper respiratory tract and eyes. The disease is most infectious during three to five days before the rash appears and is usually spread through airborne droplets.
After 4-5 days of the initial symptoms, small red spots with a white centre appear in the mouth and on the inside of the cheeks. An itchy rash appears on the skin spreading from behind the ears and the face and also effecting other areas and the small red spots may be group together in patches. The temperature shoots up while the spots are developing. Symptoms usually disappear five days after the rash begins.
Complications like pneumonia, middle ear infections resulting in deafness, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or meningitis can occur as a result of measles. It may be fatal sometimes. Having measles during a pregnancy can result in an infection of the unborn child and may in the worst case result in the death of the baby.
Treatment of measles consists of bed rest and isolation. Plenty of fluids should be given. Doctors should be consulted immediately in case of very high fever, ear ache, head ache or any signs of breathing difficulties. Vaporizers and a warm room help relieve respiratory symptoms; taking acetaminophen reduces the fever.Measles can be prevented by immunization. The measles vaccine is part of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine series given to children beginning at 12 months of age. Once infected, the disease gives life long immunity and re-infection does not happen. It is advisable that all children should be vaccinated against measles.

MUMPS
Mumps is an infectious inflammatory viral disease caused by the paramyxovirus. It occurs mainly in children between the ages of 5 and 15. The virus is contagious for about a week before the disease breaks out and is spread by airborne droplets from the nose or throat. The disease is charecterised by swelling in the parotid salivary glands, which lie in the cheeks just in front of the ears on one side of the face. The virus can also effect other salivary glands, kidneys, thyroid gland, pancreas, sexual glands and meninges of the brain and spinal cord.
Mumps begins with temperature and discomfort for the first two days followed by swelling of the gland. The swelling may be confined to one side or spread to the other side of the face. After three to four days or more the swelling subsides but remains infectious until the glands have returned to normal.
Usually Mumps is a part of growing up for children. Complications may arise especially in adults and youngsters past puberty. In adult men the disease may infect the testicles (orchitis) causing swelling, pain, soreness in the testicles and a higher temperature and in rare cases cause can cause infertility.
There is no specific treatment other than bed rest, drinking plenty of fluids and keeping the child isolated from others to prevent infection. Acidic foods and drinks like fruit juices should be avoided and food should be soft to make swallowing easy. For orchitis in adult men, icepacks are applied to relieve pain in the testes and corticosteroids may be prescribed by the doctor. Meningitis which is a serious disease require appropriate treatment in hospital. Mumps can be prevented by immunization. The mumps vaccine is part of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine series given to children beginning at 12 months of age. This vaccine gives lifelong immunity against Mumps.

DIABETES
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which either the pancreas fail to produce enough effective insulin hormone or the body cells become resistant to the insulin hormone's effect. The food you eat is broken down into a sugar called glucose. Glucose levels increase after a meal, but quickly return to normal as body cells remove excess glucose from the bloodstream.
A hormone called insulin in the bloodstream helps cells take up glucose and use it as energy. But in some people, either the pancreas cells do not make insulin or cells of the body cannot use the insulin properly. Without insulin, cells are unable to take up glucose. Instead, high levels of glucose builds up in the bloodstream causing Diabetics (where it can cause damage to eyes, nerves, and blood vessels).
There are a number of factors, both genetic and environmental, that may increase a person's risk of developing diabetes. People who have family members with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing the disease. Although diabetes can run in families, inheriting a particular gene mutation does not guarantee that a person will get the disease. They must also have certain environmental factors that trigger diabetes, which include obesity, inactivity, increasing age, and a history of gestational diabetes.
Diabetes cannot be cured but can be controlled either by diet alone, or a combination of diet or oral medication or by administering insulin injections. Treatment for diabetes is designed to control glucose level in the blood with in the normal range. Some women also need insulin injections. Blood sugar level must be checked at least once every 2 weeks.

HEART
The heart, one of the vital organs in the human body, is a powerful pump located behind and slightly to the left of the breastbone and between the lungs. It is a muscle about the size of your fist which contracts and expands using its own bio-electrical system, to continuously pump blood around the body to nourish and provide energy. The pumping of the heart is known as the cardiac cycle, which occurs about 72 times per minute and it pumps blood through network of vessels in the body.
The heart lies at the centre of these complicated network of blood vessels which include arteries and veins. The left side of the heart receives oxygen filled blood from the lungs and pumps it out through the 'arteries' around the body and the right side receives used up-blood containing carbon dioxide through the 'veins' and sends this blood to the lungs to get rid of the carbon dioxide and take in fresh oxygen.
The heart, in the simplest terms, consists of four chambers, two atria (upper chambers) and two ventricles (lower chambers). As the muscles of the heart relax, blood (oxygen filled blood from the lungs and carbon dioxide filled blood from the rest of the body) enters its various chambers. The atrium fill with blood and help move blood into the ventricle.
The ventricle supplies the main force that pumps the blood out, through either the lungs or to the rest of the body. As the blood enters the heart, Flaps called vales close quickly to stop any blood leaking backwards and thus control the direction of blood flow. There are four valves; mitral and the tricuspid between the atria and the ventricles and other two, aortic and pulmonary through which blood enters and leaves the heart.

AYURVEDA
Life is a combination of the body, senses, the mind and the atma (soul). They cannot be separated from each other and none can be neglected. From this combination ensues 'Ayur'- the span of life. Ayurveda- the science of life is the knowledge of this association and of how to maintain it as long as possible.
Ayus- means life which is a proper combination of body, mind, sense organs and the soul. Veda- means knowledge. This system of medicine evolved around 600 BC in India. Ayurveda is known to promote positive health, natural beauty and long life. Ayurveda believes that human beings and nature should be in perfect harmony and that disease occurs when the equilibrium between these two is disrupted.
Restoration of this fundamental balance, through the use of nature and its products is the main goal of this medical system. The concept is not just on curing bodily ailments but also on preventing it.Ayurvedic treatments are person specific rather than disorder specific. The age of the patient, the climate in which he lives, his cultural and social surroundings and his bodily constitution are taken into account before offering a prognosis.
Touch, Inspection and interrogation are the main tools of diagnosis. Then the physician
emphasizes a regimen of diet with the use of herbal medicines. Herbs are used to eliminate excesses and strengthen deficiencies. Their primary action is to stimulate particular organic functions. Thus Ayurveda aims to solve many health problems, only through the adjustment of diet-so there are no distressing side effects. Such an approach has proven effective over the centuries and has today become an internationally acclaimed form of healing, rejuvenation and healthy living.

NATUROPATHY
Naturopathy is the system of healing in which diseases are cured by means of all natural and rational remedies such as light, water, air, heat, exercise, diet and other physiological measures. Naturopathy is built upon the dictum of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, who declared "Nature cures; not the physicians". Naturopathy is a combination of different methods of natural healing.
It is also a way of life. It is known by different names - Nature Cure, the natural methods, the New science of healing and Healing from within. Fasting to relieve the symptoms of an upset stomach, using water as a healing aid or eating a sensible balanced diet to maintain good health are all examples of Naturopathy.
The origins of the practice can be traced back over two thousand years to the time of Hippocrates. Hippocrates and his colleagues considered disease to be an effect of some imbalance in the elements like air, water and other natural factors such as food. The basis of the modern practice can be traced back to the beginning of the19th century and to people such as Preissnitz a therapist in Germany, who used the beneficial effects of water as a therapy(hydrotherapy).
It is an important aspect of Naturopathy. Towards the end of the 19th century in Bavaria, Father Kneipp, a monk, who was obviously a Naturopath treated an American Benedictine by the name of Lust. As a result of his recovery, Lust stayed with Kneipp to study his particular methods of healing and upon returning to the United states he established his own form of natural medicine which he called Naturopathy.

SIDDHA
Siddha is one of the oldest systemof medicine practiced in India. This system was developed in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is supposed to have been conceived by the Siddhas or evolved souls ( numbering 18) who lived in the past. The word 'Siddha' comes from 'Siddhi' which means an object to be attained or perfection of heavenly bliss.
Siddhas or Siddhars were great doctors of medicine, philosophers, men with deep knowledge of anatomy and chemistry and savants noted for their wide travel, simple living and high thinking. The Siddhas have their own manuscripts or basic works, written in secret code.
Some of the treasured treatises on medicine are poems in palm leaf manuscripts which are now preserved in the Saraswathi Mahal Library, Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu. They were the pioneers in the use of metals and minerals in the treatment of diseases. The systems of Siddha and Ayurveda are very much similar.
In both systems, the basis of treatment is the three element theory or 'tridosha' (three humours). The three humours are Vatha (air), Pitta (bile) and Kapha (phlegm). It is believed that without these humours an individual cannot exist and imbalance of these may cause diseases. There are number of medicines common to both Siddha and Ayurveda. In both systems medicines are prescribed to set right the imbalance in the three life factors.

EARS
The skin in the ear canal grows like the finger nails- from deeper layers outwards -- transporting debris to the exterior, where it falls off. Ear wax or cerumen, composed of glandular secretions plus dead skin, isn't "dirty" but a barrier that keeps out contaminants -- a natural protection. Over-vigorous efforts to remove it from the ears only interfere with the self-cleansing mechanism and may drive dirt further in.
The ear is normally a self-cleaning mechanism. Wax acts in a protective manner, catching particles that may land in the ear. Fine hairs inside the ear canal constantly move wax and sloughed skin out of the canal. Wax and skin can build up inside the ear canal. If the canal is not clean, the eardrum can become completely blocked, greatly reducing hearing and eventually cause permanent damage.
Women who are exposed to German measles, measles, mumps, or any other viral diseases during their pregnancies have a very high risk of giving birth to a baby with serious hearing impairment. Have your baby's hearing tested if you have been exposed to these conditions during your pregnancy, or even if you suspect hearing impairment.
Clean your ears with extra care. Wipe the outer ear with a washcloth or tissue. Do not put anything into your ear smaller than your elbow. Do not use Q-tips, bobby pins or sharp pointed objects to clean your ears. These objects may injure the ear canal or eardrum.

TIPS FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP
Limit your caffeine intake during the day. Too much caffeine during your daylight hours can carry over to your midnight hours. It can cause you to fall asleep slower and toss and turn or wake up in the middle of the night. Determine which foods, beverages, and even medications may be affecting your sleep and adjust accordingly.
Increase your daytime activity. If you become more active during the day, your body’s excess energy will be spent and you will receive a better nights rest. Try not to work out right before bed though. Most people become more alert right after a workout.
Try blackout fabric shades. Create a sleep environment that is cool, quiet, and dark. Manage these environmental factors easily by using blackout fabric shades. Energy efficient double cellular shades have a special lining that blocks out 99 percent of light. An optional side-track system can totally eliminate all light leaks, which is particularly important for people who sleep during the day or are sensitive to any morning light peeking around the shades.
EcoSmart Shades offers a foil lined polyester double cell blackout shade with side tracks, that when lowered, keeps your bedroom cooler because the hot air is “trapped” both in the honeycomb cells and between the shade and the window. An extra benefit is that these shades can virtually pay for themselves in energy savings. Cellular blackout shades also absorb outside noise. By creating an environment that is dark, as well as quieter and cooler, you will set the stage for a peaceful night’s sleep.

CAUSES FOR HAIR LOSS
Stress is a huge reason for thinning hair. This can be your run of the mill stress from work/kids/school etc. It can also be stress from odd life situations. Long illnesses, surgery, and sudden life changes are a few examples. Sudden life changes like buying a home and getting married can cause an underlying stress.
Nutritional deficiency can cause your hair to thin. Your body needs the right balance of nutrients in order to keep running like the well oiled machine it is. If you start to neglect your diet you can see the results on your head as well as your waist. Eating pattern changes occur most when you are under stress, so this leads back to the first one.
Hormone imbalance is another leading cause. This could be due to sudden body chemistry changes. Pregnancy wreaks havoc on proper hormone balance. Most post pregnant mothers go through a temporary hair loss which corrects itself within a few months. Typically, if hormone imbalance is the cause the hair loss will be temporary.
Illnesses can cause tragic amounts of temporary hair loss. This one ties in with a few of the others. An illness can cause an imbalance of hormones which will lead to hair loss. Also, stress/depression can lead to an illness that will cause the lost hair. Any surgery can also cause hair loss due to an underlying bodily stress.

TIPS FOR CLEANSING YOUR FACE
At a young age, good personal hygiene habits should start. You really need to wash your face every day to keep your skin looking healthy and avoid acne. Select the proper cleanser. It is important to choose a cleanser that is right for your skin-type, after checking all of the options available to you. Depending on whether you dry, normal or oily skin, you'll require a cleanser that suits it.
Keep your hands clean. Clean hands are necessary because you will be using your hands to clean your face. Otherwise, you will be moving the dirt from them directly to the pores in your face. Pull back your hair. Put your hair in an elastic band so you can expose the entire surface for cleaning.
Wash your face using only warm water. Did you know that the temperature of your water can affect how well the cleanser works? Hot water will dry your skin and cold water won't dissolve grime and bacteria. Always start off with a warm water rinse using a clean sponge, washcloth or hand.
Put the cleanser on the area you want to clean. In small circles, using a cloth or your bare hands, apply the soap to the affected area. Don't scrub! Consider your neck and chin as areas of your face also, so put cleanser there too. Be gentle on your face - consider it as fragile. Work the cleanser in with easy strokes so as not to damage your skin.

Work the cleanser in with easy strokes so as not to damage your skin.

STAY STRONG BY WALKING
Shoes are the most important part of your walking gear. Good walking shoes are generally flat, but flexible, so your foot rolls with each step. They should fit well, but leave enough room for your feet to spread out while walking. Wear socks that are comfortable. Try socks made of cotton or other sweat-wicking materials—they will keep your feet drier and help prevent blisters.
It's always best to walk where you can avoid trafficzlike parks or even the mall! Or try to find an area where there are sidewalks. If you have to walk on a street without sidewalks, walk close to the curb facing traffic. Remember to cross the street only at marked crosswalks or at corners, keep your ears and eyes open, and watch out for traffic in front and back of you.
Water, It's a good idea to drink some water before you head out to walk, while you are walking, and when you get backzeven if it's cold outside or you don't feel thirsty. In the summer, late afternoons (not nights) and mornings are the best times to walk to avoid the midday heat and humidity.
You've probably been walking for about as long as you've been talking. But walking isn't just a way to get from here to there; it's also a great weight- bearing physical activity that can help you build strong bones. Walking doesn't require a lot of equipment, you can do it anywhere, it is always available by just walking out your front door, and it's a great way to relax and refresh.

DIET & EXERCISE FOR DIABETES

Exercise, the dreaded E word, is vital to living a healthy lifestyle and managing your diabetes. Despite popular belief, exercise doesn't have to be difficult. You can create a practical exercise plan that fits into your daily life.
If a gym doesn't work for you, take the time to catch up with a friend during an afternoon walk or you can bring back the romance, and the muscle, by a night out dancing. Adding physical activity to your daily routine isn't difficult and it will pay off greatly in the long run.
Before you chow down look closely at your plate, it should look like the one below, 50% vegetables, 25% proteins and 25% grains or starches, and a glass of milk to wash it all down makes this a well-rounded healthy meal.

HELP YOUR CHILD GROW HEALTHY
Give your children building blocks for a healthy lifestyle by teaching them the importance of good nutrition and regular physical activity. Eating well and being physically active every day are keys to your child’s health and well-being. Eating too many high calorie foods and getting too little physical activity can lead to excessive weight gain and physical health problems, such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, now being diagnosed in children.
Help your children develop healthy eating habits at an early age. Nutritious food is something to enjoy. It helps children grow strong and gives them energy. Set an example for active living by moving with your kids. Your kids pay attention to you, they really do. Teach your children that good health depends on the right balance between what they eat and how
much they move.
Good nutrition should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle that also includes regular physical activity. To maintain weight, both kids and adults must balance the calories they eat with the calories they burn through physical activity. If you eat more calories than you use up in physical activity, you gain weight. If you eat fewer calories than you use up, you lose weight. Make a commitment to helping your family eat sensibly and move more often.
Leave the candy, soft drinks, chips and cookies at the store. Substitute them with fruits, vegetables, nuts, and low-fat or nonfat milk products. Your child will soon learn to make smart food choices outside your home as well. Choose a variety of foods. No single food or food group supplies all the nutrients in the amounts that you need for good health.

ESSENTIAL HEALTH TIPS
Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing.
Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats (i.e. pork, bacon, ham, salami, ribs and sausage). Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Most are available in lower fat versions such as substitute butter, fat free cheeses and mayonnaise.
Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible.
If you can't live in a smog-free environment, at least avoid smoke-filled rooms, high traffic areas, breathing in highway fumes and exercising near busy thoroughfares. Exercise outside when the smog rating is low. Exercise indoors in air conditioning when air quality is good. Plant lots of shrubbery in your yard. It's a good pollution and dirt from the street deterrent.
